Live forecasts update automatically; written guidance last reviewed 16 June 2026 by the True North Brief Weather Desk. Data from Environment and Climate Change Canada and other national met services via Open-Meteo.

Environment and Climate Change Canada operates a network of 33 weather radars across the country, scanning up to 256 kilometres in range and updating every 10 minutes. In plain English, the live radar above shows you where rain or snow is falling right now and where it’s heading next.

What do the colours on the radar map mean?

Light green indicates light rain (1–4 mm/hr), while yellow and orange show moderate to heavy rain (5–20 mm/hr). Red and magenta signal intense downpours or hail. For snow, the scale shifts to blue and purple, with darker shades representing heavier snowfall rates. The live radar above updates every 10 minutes, so you can track storms as they develop.

How far ahead can radar predict the weather?

Radar is a nowcasting tool, not a forecast. It shows precipitation that has already formed and is moving. Most radar images, including the one above, include a 1-hour loop that lets you estimate arrival times. For longer outlooks, pair radar with the Canada weather hub or check Weather Tomorrow Canada for a full-day picture.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weather radar and satellite imagery?

Radar uses ground-based pulses to detect precipitation particles in the lower atmosphere. Satellite imagery shows clouds from above but cannot directly measure rain or snow hitting the ground. Radar is better for real-time storm tracking.

Why is there no radar data for my area?

Radar coverage is strongest in southern Canada. Areas like northern Ontario, the territories, and parts of Atlantic Canada may have gaps. For those regions, check The Weather Network Canada or use satellite loops for cloud patterns.

How accurate is the live radar for Toronto or St. John’s?

For cities like Toronto or St. John’s, radar accuracy is high within 100 km of the radar site. The toronto weather radar 24 hour loop and weather radar near st john’s nl show reliable precipitation intensity, though beam blockage from hills can cause minor gaps.
