Editorial Policy

Our Editorial Process

True North Brief adheres to a rigorous editorial process that prioritises accuracy, fairness, and accountability. Every article undergoes multiple stages of review, including initial fact-checking, source verification, and senior editorial oversight. Our team applies Canadian Press style and relevant legal considerations to ensure all content meets professional journalism standards before publication.

Our fact‑checking policy outlines the specific verification steps we take. We also maintain a corrections policy to address any errors transparently. All staff are trained in ethical reporting and avoid conflicts of interest.

News, Opinion, and Sponsored Content

We clearly distinguish between news reporting, opinion pieces, and sponsored content. News articles present verified facts without bias. Opinion columns reflect the views of named authors and are labelled as such. Sponsored content is produced in collaboration with advertisers and is clearly marked to ensure readers can differentiate it from independent editorial material.

Sponsored content is identified with a “Sponsored” label at the top and bottom of the page. Opinion pieces appear under the columnist’s name and portrait, and include a disclaimer stating the views are the author’s own. News articles carry no such labelling. This separation is fundamental to our editorial policy.

Editorial Independence

True North Brief maintains full editorial independence from its owners and funders. Our editorial decisions are made solely by the editorial team, guided by journalistic principles and the public interest. We disclose our ownership and funding structure transparently to uphold trust and allow readers to assess any potential influences.

Details about our ownership and funding can be found on our ownership and funding page. Our editors and reporters are required to disclose any personal or financial conflicts that could affect their work. We do not allow advertisers or sponsors to influence editorial content.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

We disclose the use of artificial intelligence tools in our content creation. AI may assist with research, drafting, or editing, but all final content is reviewed and approved by human editors. Any AI-generated material is clearly identified, and we maintain editorial accountability for accuracy and originality.

When AI tools are used for data analysis or summarization, we note this in the article footer. Readers can contact us via our contact page if they have questions about AI use in specific pieces.

Attribution and Named Writers

All articles are attributed to named writers or editors, except in rare cases where anonymity is necessary for safety or source protection. Byline information includes the writer’s role and credentials. This practice ensures accountability and allows readers to evaluate the expertise behind each piece.

Our editorial team is listed on the our team page. Each writer is responsible for the accuracy of their work and must adhere to our ethical guidelines. Anonymous sourcing is used only when the information is vital and the source would face harm if identified.

Complaints Route and Corrections

We welcome feedback and complaints from our readers. Concerns about accuracy, fairness, or ethical breaches can be submitted via our complaints procedure. We investigate all complaints promptly and publish corrections or clarifications when warranted. Our corrections policy outlines the process for addressing errors.
