Our Story

In early 2023, Great Lakes Press Ltd. identified a growing need among English-speaking readers in Canada and abroad for news briefings that were clear, practical, and free of spin. The media landscape was crowded with opinion-driven outlets or overly simplified summaries, but few offered the kind of direct, sourced reporting that helps busy readers grasp complex issues quickly. True North Brief was founded to fill that gap: a digital publication built on the principle that trustworthy Canadian journalism should be both accessible and rigorous.

Why did Great Lakes Press Ltd. launch True North Brief?

Great Lakes Press Ltd. saw that many Canadian news readers wanted reliable, concise coverage without the noise of partisan commentary or the clutter of clickbait. Existing briefing services often buried key facts or leaned on vague sourcing. The company decided to create a publication that delivers clear, practical coverage of Canadian news, politics, business, markets, technology, and public-interest stories — all written by named journalists, reviewed by an editor, and fact-checked before going live. The goal is to help readers understand what matters, not to tell them what to think.

Who is responsible for what we publish?

Editor-in-Chief Daniel Campbell sets editorial standards, makes all publication decisions, and is the final authority on corrections. He leads a dedicated desk structure: Managing Editor Sarah Mitchell oversees the daily newsroom and headline review; Markets & TSX Editor Michael Foster covers Canadian markets and commodities; Economy Correspondent Emily Anderson reports on monetary policy, inflation, and jobs; Corporate & Industry Editor James Patterson handles corporate news and mergers; and Standards & Fact-Checking Lead Rachel Miller manages source verification and corrections. Every piece is drafted by a named writer, reviewed by an editor, and fact-checked before publication. You can meet the full team on our team page.

What you can expect from us

Every article on True North Brief carries a clear byline, direct sourcing, and a transparent correction process. We link to primary sources where possible and explain how we know what we know. Our editorial policies — including our editorial policy and sources and standards — are published for anyone to review. We do not use anonymous sources except in rare cases of genuine risk, and those exceptions are disclosed. AI-assisted tools may support research or drafting, but they never replace human editorial judgement; every piece is approved by a human editor. Sponsored or commercial material is clearly labelled, and affiliate links are disclosed. Our commitment is to trustworthy Canadian journalism that helps readers understand complex issues without spin or oversimplification.

How do we handle mistakes?

When we make a mistake, we correct it promptly and transparently. Our corrections policy explains how errors are identified, updated, and noted in the article. Readers can send correction requests directly to Rachel Miller at factcheck@truenorthbrief.com. We also have a formal complaints procedure for more serious concerns. Getting it right is our responsibility, and we take it seriously.

How is True North Brief funded?

We are funded through display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships, and content licensing. All sponsored or commercial material is clearly labelled, and affiliate links are disclosed in accordance with Canadian law. Commercial relationships never dictate editorial conclusions. A full breakdown of our funding sources, including our ownership structure, is available on our ownership and funding page.
