What makes a good tip for True North Brief?
A good tip is concrete, verifiable, and connected to Canadian news, politics, business, markets, technology, or culture. We look for policy developments, government decisions, corporate moves, market trends, whistleblower accounts, or public-interest stories that are not yet widely reported.
It helps if you can provide documents, data, or a clear outline of what you know. Even a small piece of information can lead to a broader investigation, but we need enough context to assess its significance. We are less interested in vague rumours or unsubstantiated claims. If your tip involves a specific company or person, include background and any supporting evidence. Stories with Canadian relevance — whether local, regional, or national — are our focus.
How should I send my tip?

We accept tips via encrypted email if you require. While we do not currently have a secure web form, we can coordinate other channels upon request. What information should I include?
Include as much detail as possible: the key facts, the people or organisations involved, the timeline, and any supporting documentation or sources. If you have documents, attach them; if you have notes or recordings, describe what they contain.
Tell us why you believe this is a story worth covering and whether you have seen it reported elsewhere. If you are a source with direct knowledge, explain your relationship to the subject. The more we have to start with, the faster we can evaluate your tip. You do not need to structure it formally — just write clearly. If you are submitting a tip about a market development, mention the company, sector, and any relevant data. For cultural or technology angles, specify the impact on Canadian audiences.
How does True North Brief verify tips?
Every tip is assessed by our editorial team and may be referred to the standards desk led by Rachel Miller, our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead. We follow the procedures outlined in our Fact-Checking Policy and rely on source verification methods described in our Sources & Standards page.
We cross-check information against public records, official documents, and other reliable sources. We may contact you for additional details. If we decide to publish, we will corroborate the core claims with at least two independent sources where possible. For sensitive tips, we take extra care to protect the source’s identity. No story based on a tip goes live without human editorial approval, consistent with our AI/Automation Policy.
What happens after I submit a tip?
Your tip will be reviewed by the relevant editor: Sarah Mitchell for daily news, Michael Foster for markets, or James Patterson for corporate stories. If it matches our editorial focus, a reporter may follow up with you. If not, we will not usually reply unless we need more information.
We receive many tips and cannot respond to every one. If you do not hear back within two weeks, it likely means we are not pursuing the story at this time. You are free to send your tip to another outlet. We do not share or publish tips without first contacting you. If your tip leads to a story, we will acknowledge your contribution as agreed with you.
Can I submit a tip confidentially?
Yes. You can request confidentiality when you send your tip. We respect sources’ anonymity and protect identities in accordance with our Privacy Policy and journalistic ethics.
If you prefer to remain anonymous, do not include identifying details in your initial email. Use a secure email service or a temporary account. Let us know what level of protection you need. We will not disclose your identity to third parties without your consent unless required by law. What you can expect from us
When we pursue a tip, you can expect a thorough, fair investigation and clear communication. We will respect your time and your boundaries. We will not publish anything without verifying it to our high standards.
You can also expect that we will correct any errors promptly in accordance with our Corrections Policy. If we use your tip as a basis for a story, we will ensure it is attributed appropriately (with your permission) or kept anonymous as agreed. True North Brief does not pay for tips, but we value your contribution to trustworthy Canadian journalism. How do I correct an error in a story I tipped?
If you believe a story based on your tip contains an error, please send a correction request to corrections@truenorthbrief.com. Include the article URL, the error, and the correct information.
